1. Weight training will reduce the risks of osteoporosis

One thing that really frustrates me is the amount of postmenopausal women who are still performing a lot of cardio training such as walking on the treadmill, using the elliptical machine, or cycling. Billions (yes billions) of dollars are spent each year on medical care treating women with hip fractures. Women need to be doing a lot more weight training, or resistance exercise, in order to strengthen bones and increase bone density.

What people need to understand is that bone tissue is just like any other live tissue such as the heart or the kidneys. It is constantly remodeling itself. The problem lies in the fact that the buildup process is less efficient than the breakdown process down known as “resorption”. Over the years bone mineral density becomes less and less, making your bones more and more fragile. With the reduction of the hormone estrogen in post-menopausal women, less bone is formed thus increasing the risks of osteoporosis.

When there is a shortage of healthy red blood cells, the amount of oxygen being carried through the circulatory system is insufficient to meet all of the body’s needs. This is called anemia.

The condition affects at least twice as many women as men. Among its symptoms are fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, depression and cloudy thinking. Because these symptoms have many other possible causes, anemia often goes undiagnosed and untreated.

Although some people think of anemia as a “young woman’s disease,” it affects postmenopausal women, too. In fact, anemia hits seniors hard, increasing their risk for cognitive dysfunction (such as problems remembering to take medication or pay bills)… physical impairment (for instance, difficulty getting up from a chair, walking or maintaining balance)… hospitalization… and death. How to protect yourself… Continue reading ‘Tired? Breathless? Confused? The Culprit Could be Anemia’ »
