I don’t know if you’re like me but I’m sick of using a nightcream that leaves an oily sheen and clogs my pores. I want to keep my complexion in good condition but I hate buying cheap things from the supermarket that don’t work. But I really don’t want to get anything super-expensive either. So I did a little digging and research about what makes a good nightcream that doesn’t cost the earth.
It turns out that using a cream at night is a really good idea. This is the time when your skin gets a chance to rest from the exposure and stress of the day. So if you put good quality ingredients on your face at night, they can work through your skin to restore and nourish while you sleep.
The best nightcreams will target the three main causes of wrinkles and visible aging. These are:
- loss of collagen and elastin, which leads to sagging and lack of suppleness
- lower levels of hyaluronic acid, which leads to cell structure breakdown
- oxidation through the action of free radicals, which damages cells and causes wrinkles.
Fortunately, targeting these three problems can be done without lots of nasty chemicals and without costing a lot of money.
To help with collagen and elastin, look for a product containing keratin. This is derived from sheep’s wool. It’s a protein found throughout the body and it improves the structure of the skin.
There’s a special compound of keratin that is specially designed to work on the complexion called CynergyTKâ„¢. This can actually stimulate your skin to regrow its own collagen and elastin.
Don’t be fooled by products that say they contain collagen and elastin. You can’t apply collagen and expect the skin to do anything with it – the molecules are too large to get through. You need to stimulate your own ability to regrow collagen and elastin.
To stop cell structure breakdown, look for phytessence wakame. This is a Japanese sea algae. It sounds a bit strange but it’s actually a powerful antioxidant. It helps to prevent the loss of hyaluronic acid and keep the skin elastic and smooth.
And to mop up those free radicals, look for an antioxidant called Coenzyme Q10. This is a natural substance found in every cell in the body but it diminishes as we age. This is a popular ingredient in many creams but the most effective form is a special ‘nano-emulsion’ that is best able to penetrate the skin.
Toss in some other natural ingredients such as active manuka honey for keep the complexion blemish-free, avocado extract and shea butter, and you have an excellent nightcream.
All these special ingredients sound as if they could be very pricey but in fact it’s possible to get these high quality ingredients without paying the earth.
