Hemorrhagic Cyst Treatment

A hemorrhagic cyst sounds scary, but in reality is usually a completely natural and normal part of the menstrual cycle of many women. Most disappear before you are even aware you have one. At least this is the case for most women, but for those of us with a bit less luck we can be debilitated by them.

Although most of these cysts are technically harmless, their effect can be so great that you need to seek treatment.

Conventional Treatment

The most obvious symptom of a hemorrhagic cyst is a sharp pain in your side right before ovulation. Oral birth control pills are usually prescribed for these cysts because they stop you ovulating. The general thought is that if the ovaries do not ovulate, there will be no cyst formation.

Unfortunately there are a couple of flaws with this treatment idea.

1. Long term use of the BCP is not without its own set of risks – especially for older women or those who smoke. These risks far outweigh the risk associated with the hemorrhagic cyst.
2. Many women want to have children so being on the birth control pill would not be a desired option.
3. Birth control pills are also made differently depending on the brand. Some prescription versions are so low dose when it comes to the hormone levels that they really do not entirely prevent ovulation. If they do nothing to prevent ovulation in an ovary that forms a painful hemorrhagic cyst, it is a pointless management option.

There can be times when your treatment at home or with prescription medication does not help with the pain and discomfort. In these cases it is not unusual for your GP to order an ultrasound be done so that they can have a better look at your cyst and decide on whether it needs removing.

Size alone will not determine whether a doctor will remove your hemorrhagic cyst or not. Although an ultrasound can show cysts that are bigger than a centimeter, it is not unheard of for cysts of up to 6 cm to go away without further treatment.

In very rare cases women can have emergency surgery because of their cyst size, but this is almost unheard of among women who have had regular treatment.

When your usual treatment fails and surgery is required;

* There are a few cases where a hemorrhagic cyst has caused an emergency surgery. As an example a ruptured blood cyst can cause such severe blood loss that the patient suffers from anemia. This situation would absolutely require emergency surgery.
* Sometimes you may be in so much untreatable pain, that the doctor will have no choice but to remove the cyst surgically.

Living with a hemorrhagic cyst in these conditions is incapacitating and excruciating, so the surgical option is almost welcomed in these rare cases.
